with your contention that the SportCombi is a "Saab lover's Saab if there ever is one". In fact, I think that GM has not been catering to the "Saab lovers" for quite some time. It appears to me that they have forsaken their core SAAB cult members in hopes of greater sales.
While many SAAB afficianados do like the SportCombi, it's not a very good replacement for the hatchback, which the brand dropped a few years back. SAAB lovers LOVED the hatchback. It's a small station wagon.
GM decided it wants SAAB to compete with Audi and BMW. Therefore they went to sedans-only. Audi comes out with a small SportWagon (the A3), so obviously SAAB has to match that with the SportCombi. BMW comes out with the X5, Volvo with the XC90, so SAAB counters with the 9-7X. They've gotten into this habit of having to compete model-for-model with the other European upscale car manufacturers.
If GM really cared about SAAB's brand identity, they wouldn't move production to Germany. SAABs are inherently Scandanavian. You dilute the last thing that made a SAAB a SAAB (after dumping hatchbacks): its Swedishness.
I really don't believe that these new product offerings GM is working into the SAAB lineup are the best thing for SAAB. They're simply a way for GM to try and make more money by rebranding products they already produce.
