This is not that strange. Having dealt with this on my own car, I have some recent insight into why the alternator bracket has an oil passage behind it. This may look weird to someone with automatic transmission, but for the models with manual transmission, there are actual oil lines that tap into the block behind the alternator bracket. These carry oil to an additional oil cooler that is absent on models with auto transmission. I have this setup and I assure you that the hole behind the alternator bracket is there for a reason.
Yes, the gasket leaks sometimes, just like all gaskets in any engine. Nothing unusual, as far as I am concerned.
