[ Next by Date ] Member Login / Signup - Members see fewer ads. - Latest Member Gallery Photos Building 2.0 liter engine Posted by richard welty (more from richard welty) on Sat, 4 Mar 1989 22:22:08 sometime this summer, i hope to find the time and funds tobuild a new engine for my 1973 99. while i've done mechanicalwork of moderate complexity before, this will be my first engine.i'm kind of hoping that someone on this list has some experiencethey can share with me ...the details -- the car currently has bosch d-type fool injection.as i've had little trouble with it, i would need a compelling reasonto replace it with webers (say, a bunch of horsepower.)i have some parts around -- i have the short block from a 74sitting on my garage floor, and i have a 76 parts car with a solidengine in it sitting next to a friend's barn. i don't really have anyfaith in any of the cylinder heads i have -- they've all gone alot of miles without being checked out (the head on the 76 enginehas been in there for around 170k miles, which i find mildlyunbelieveable.)so, does anyone have any experience to share? any ideas aboutperformance work (different pistons, rods, etc.)? i have toput a new exhaust system on it -- should i use the manifold on the73 (single down pipe), the manifold on the 76 (two down pipes), orget some sort of header? i figure to get a free flow exhaustsystem from motorsport in Jamestown NY.also, on the transmission -- i can't afford one of eric carlsson'skiller gearboxes (only $5000 -- snort) so i'm going to have tostick with normal stuff. i've got the tranny from a 74 in the carnow, and it doesn't stay in gear. the original tranny is on myworkbench -- it sometimes pops out of 3rd, and the 3rd-4th syncrois marginal. the 76 has a good transmission, but the transfercase is a disaster area (which was the last straw leading to the76 being declared parts.) should i try to put together somethingthat works from this mess, or maybe give one (probably the 73) toa good saab tranny guy to fix, or just punt and trade one of themin on a rebuilt unit?during transmission transition, it seems a good time to think aboutthe future of the clutch. pros and cons of the external vs. internalslave cylinder? the internal ones don't die as often, but they areharder to get to. how hard is it to change the plumbing from externalto internal? i presume that i'll need the newer transmission if iswitch to the internal slave cylinder, or at least the newer transfercase housing. it seems to me that the clutch might be differentas well. since i need a new one soon (like, about 2 months ago,)i'd like to factor all this in before i buy the wrong thing.any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.richard--richard welty 518-387-6346, GE R&D, K1-5C39, Niskayuna, New York weltyno39sdcx6spamx782steinmetz.ge.com weltyno39sdcx6spamx782crd.ge.com uunet!steinmetz!welty Posts in this Thread:
