Help me get the slosh out of my front end
Posted by ted (more from ted) on Thu, 9 Mar 1989 20:11:37
I have a 1986 Saab 900S 3 door with about 54K miles, and I'm havingsome problems with the front end. At about 65-70 mph when I switchlanes, it feels as is there is a bit of play in the steering. I haveto steer in the opposite direction to straighten out the wheels. Thisplay is also _very_ noticeable when driving over a steel-grate bridge.I hold the steering wheel straight, and the tires go back and forth,it's really bizarre. Here the mechanical situation:- No wrecks or front end damage- Front tires: Dunlop GT Qualifiers HR4 205/60 (All season,H rated,30 PSI)- Rear tires: Pirelli P6's 195/60 (stock tires, 32 PSI)- Front end aligned by a tire shop, and re-checked by the dealer. The dealer swears it's because of the different types of tires betweenthe front and the rear. I don't believe him for two reasons: 1) I hadthe same tire combo on a 1985 900 Turbo, with no problems at all; and2) the problem existed with identical Pirellis on the front. Iunderstand the problems with driving in snow/rain with different treadpatterns, but the problem occurs on dry roads. My questions:- What are the obvious things to look for? Is there something obvious?- I've heard from several sources that Pirelli's can 'blow' belts. Can anyone confirm or deny this?- That, combined with their poor snow performance, lead me to try theDunlop all-season tires. Are my Dunlops lemons? (They worked well inthe snow and on my old Saab.)- I now live near Lawrence, MA. Someone (I'm pretty sure it was onthis list) recommended a private shop in Lawrence that did good work. Can that someone send me the name of the shop?Any answers to these questions would be greatly appreciated.
