900T Problems.
Posted by Seshashayee Murthy (more from Seshashayee Murthy) on Sat, 24 Jun 1989 15:43:44
My 1983 Saab 900 Turbo 5 speed , 128000 miles, has started actingup. Any help appreciated. Here are the details. The problem first appeared 6/19 evening. The car idles rough. I was ina hurry to get home so I did not warm up the car. I put it in firstand took off. The engine died in a few feet and the entire car lurchedforward. I restarted the car and engaged 1st gear. On lifting theclutch pedal I heard a screeching noise from the left wheel. Thecar moved forward but I had difficulty shifting to 2nd gear.I checked the transmission fluid level and seeing that it was finedecided to drive home. The car drove well in 4th and 5th gearsbut behaved like it was low in power in 1st and 2nd. Anyway I madeit home.Later that evening I tried to drive the car to the supermarket. Iput the car in reverse and drove about 10 feet. There was a thudand I felt like I had hit a wall and the car popped out of reverse.I then put it back in reverse and got out of my driveway.I then tried to climb up the hill next to my house but my car wouldnot climb. It made a moise like gears grinding.I pushed it back to my driveway. I then decided to change thetransmission fluid. I found that the magnet had several iron filingson it and one piece of metal about 3 mm x 5 mm x 4mm. I drainedevery last drop and then added 10W30 SG/CD oil. I then started up thecar and tried to drive it up the slope next to my house. It madeit all the way to the top but then the car started shuddering andI depressed the clutch. I could not move the gear out of 1st.Finally I found that raising the clutch did not cause the car to movebut allowed me to move the gear out of 1st. I then put the car inreverse but it would not move. Also the gear was stuck inreverse as long as the clutch was depressed.I pushed the car back to my driveway. Later I found that reverseand 1st seemed fine as long as I drive on my flat driveway.I have some questions.1. Do you know what the problem could be. (The CV joint bootsare fine and the clutch was replaced by a dealer about 6000miles back)2. If the transmission is gone how much would a usedtransmission cost. I am being quoted $1600 for a rebuilt trannyand $1000 for a used tranny. I am interested in knowing if thereis a kit which can be used to rebuild the tranny. How difficultis this procedure and do I need any special tools. I havedone things like replace the head on a honda civic.3. If It is going to cost $1000 or more to fix the car, does anyonewant to buy the car (for parts?) for $3000.(4dr sedan, perfect silver body and blue interior, compression of 120all 4 cylinders, good turbo, all receipts for maintenance available.)Thanks a lot and I hope I get to keep the car.Sesh Murthy, murthyno39sdcx6spamx782ibm.com, 914-789-7840PS.
