Inner Joint Failure
Posted by Peter Dixon (more from Peter Dixon) on Thu, 29 Jun 1989 22:54:40
Maybe I'm just not living right... my beloved '79 900T bites again.About a week back, while backing uphill out of a steep driveway and turning sharply, the right inner driveshaft joint blew apart. Thisleft the trunion (tripod?) bearing races on the ground, the needle bearingsthat used to live inside them nowhere to be found and the outer(sheetmetal) portion of the driver itself soundly thrashed. And itripped the rubber boot, too. *sigh*So... over the next few days I procure and install:I finish this up Friday evening, the car drives, things are quiet, lookin' good. Then, come Monday morning (can't trust that day...), while backing out ofmy own driveway, the joint fails again. Arrgh! So folks, any ideas? The situation (whatever it is) appears to haveworsened. The second failure was under considerably less torque and lock. What's wrong with this picture?peter
