Shocks & Winter Tires
Posted by Steve Barber (more from Steve Barber) on Tue, 15 Aug 1989 02:11:04
I've got a question about shock absorbers..I'm now driving an '83 900 Turbo and one of the first things Ineed to do is change the front shocks. I'm curious what kindof experiences you've all had with various kinds of shocks. Aguy at a local store that sells KYB and Boge is trying to sell meBoges for ~105/pair. (KYB would be more like $50/pair on sale)I'd love Bilsteins but they don't quite fit my budget.I live on a dirt road so I'm looking for a set that's durableand compliant, but I do enjoy hard driving occasionaly and wantsomething firm and controlled. (i.e., I want a durable shockthat handles well but isn't so firm that it's going to rattle thecar apart when I drive to work each morning.)Specifically, can anyone tell me anything about Boges? I've neverheard of them before. Is $52 each a good price for them?**One more question while I'm at it...On my old Saab I had skinny (165SR15) Michelin XZXes which I was prettysure would do fine in heavy snow because they were narrow and still hadpretty good tread depth. However, on my 'new' '83 Turbo, I've got185/65R15 Pirelli P8s on Saab alloy wheels, and the tread depth seemsmarginal to me considering where I'll be this coming winter. (Houghton,Michigan - about as far north as you can get in the U.S., not countingAlaska - over 200 inches of snow avg. per year, last year was over 300).[Michigan Technological University]Anyway, last year I had a Honda Civic sedan with plain old Goodyear Vectorsand didn't really have any problems, but this year I'll be living offcampus and depending on the Saab to get me to class every day.I'm wondering a few things -a) How are P8s in snow? On ice?b) Can anyone recommend a good aggressive snow tire that's cheap and won't be too obnoxious on the highway for the 3 or 4 1000-mile round trips I'll be making home over the winter?c) A good, inexpensive source of plain but nice-looking steel wheels to mount said snow tires on?d) I'm a little confused yet as to what tire and wheel sizes I can put on this car without affecting speedometer accuracy. What's the best size for the snow tires? What's the widest size you can put on without rubbing anywhere? Is there anything to be gained by putting wider tires on the car during the summer months? (Not that I want to, they'd look funny. Just curious.)e) What is the wheel size of the stock alloys? Glancing through R&T I see advertisers listing wheel sizes like '15x6'. What are mine? Thanks for the help. If you email me I'll summarize in a coupleof weeks. If this has already been covered in the list, let me know(nicely please) and I'll look it up. I'm sure some of these questionswould be answered by the owner's manual, but I'm missing mine and the newone hasn't come in yet.P.S. Any other winter-prep hints specific to the Saab would be appreciatedas well! It gets cold up there!-- --**-Steve Barber----stevebno39sdcx6spamx782shade.Ann-Arbor.MI.US----(cmode)-------------------
