Buy a copy of the Bentley manual for your car. At around $50.00, (or
cheaper if you can find it used on Amazon or Ebay) it's money well
spent! Even if you never plan to work on your own car, by reading up on
the repair procedures you'll be able to talk knowledgably to your
mechanic and definitely save money!

Anyway, back to the problem at hand. There is a plug somewhere in the
interior, either under the back seat or directly in front of the shifter
under the cover. You take a wire with an inline switch, (I just use an
extra household light switch) and connect it between one of the
terminals on that plug and ground. By working a certain combination
with the ignition switch and your inline switch, you can get the Check
Engine light to flash out the code for your particular problem. Bentley
explains the procedure and gives you the codes. Do this while the car
is malfunctioning, then take the results to your mechanic for repair.
Piece o' cake.

Good luck!
