Day 1 journal [saabnet.com]

Day 1 -- Thursday
In a modest replay of our 1999 road trip to Keystone, Scott, my brother Dave,
and I convened on the SF peninsula for our 848 mile trek to Crystal Mountain.
Dave and I were driving the same cars we were in five years ago: he was
driving his black 1994 9000 Aero and I was driving Paul Perry's 1967 Sonett
II V-4. While Scott had other commitments and couldn't go to the SOC this
yr, he drove his new 9-2X Aero with us to meet Paul in the East Bay and then
later peeled off and returned home. Paul was towing his 67 Sonett II V-4
racer with his '94 9000 Aero tow vehicle. It was only coincidence that we
had 2 Aeros and 2 Sonett V-4s.
The cool fog blanketing the East Bay was soon left behind as we headed toward
Sacramento and points north. For the two Aeros, their exterior thermometers
registered in the triple digits, exceeding their interior ACC by more than 30
degrees F. My interior and exteriors were identical.... to one another, that
is. My AC robbed no engine power since it consisted of a spray bottle of
water and a gel-filled bandana. Once we reached the trees of Oregon, the
drive for me was considerably more comfortable as the Sonett buzzed along at
70mph on the flats as well the hills.
Uneventfully, our day ended in Grants Pass where we spent the night.
