Gas Gauge
Posted by Jeffrey C Honig (more from Jeffrey C Honig) on Fri, 20 Oct 1989 15:22:07
The fuel level sender in my 1981 900 gave up the ghost last Decemberafter two successful rebuilds. Since I run into gas containingMethonal on occassion while traveling I decided to install the latermodel metal fuel level sender and the adaptor kit.The adaptor kit included a new plug and a relay sized modulecontaining circuitry to convert the negative reference signal from thenew sender to a positive reference signal for my old gas gauge (or isit the other way around?).Since I've installed this, the gas gauge is no longer linear. Itdisplays 1/2 full when the tank is really 3/4 full, and 1/4 full whenthe tank is really 1/2 full. The gauge also flutters alot when the car is in motion, but now whenit is stopped. It sounds to me like both the sender and the converter need to bereplaced, but I'd like to be sure before I go to the dealer. Since Iinstalled the parts myself, the only warranty is on parts, not labor.Has anyone seen either of these problems? Thanks.Jeff
