I have overhauled two master cylinders. On car two (1983 900) (with manual
transmission) I noticed brake fade whilst resetting the hand brake mechanism.
Once the cylinder showed signs of failure it got noticably bad within a
couple of days.

For a master cylinder, on the older 900s you can purchase for about 20 UK
Pounds an overhaul kit, which includes all the ceals including the piston
(and springs if memory serves me right). Unless the cylinder is damaged
there is no need to replace the whole lot.

and that would not be a cheap job.
