Irritating noise, what is failing?
Posted by Charles Christacopoulos (more from Charles Christacopoulos) on Wed, 26 Jul 2000 10:57:40
Hi,
On my nearly 3 year old 9000 CSE (42k miles) I have started getting a noise from the area of the speedometer and rev counter.
As I have just a few more days of Gurantee left any quick help will be appreciated (I need to convince the dealer).
Symptoms.
1. The last two mornings the noise was there as soon as the engine was started. The noise changes after a few minutes to what happens at (s) below.
2. When the car is moving there is constant 'creacking', it disappears completely when the car comes to a complete stop. Drive you get noise, stop no noice. (On right hand turns the noise disappears). Although the sound is quite high pitched, it does not change according to the speed I am doing or according to the revs (when the car goes fast I can no longer hear it, either becasue of car noise or because it dissapears).
If the speedo was manually driven from the gearbox I would have said the steel rope driving it was dry or worn. It is driven from a motor though (so I am told by the dealer).
If I am right it sound like dry and loose plastic gears. If I am wrong it can be some badly fitting plastic panels/fittings (but why should the move when the car is in motion?)
Can it be anything else than the instrument panel? Any guesses?
Thanks Charles
