I had a similar problem with my -92 9000 (2,3 non turbo). I took it to my dealer several times before problem was isolated. After having changed the thermostat, flushed the coolingsystem they located the problem. Some of the wiring from the thermostat to the fan had corroded, and was only engaging the fan now and then (not in trafficjams...) It seems the reason is that here in Sweden, salt is put on the roads to clear ice, and not only destroys the paint, its eats the wiring in the front. Anyhow, it was fixed at a very small cost.
I hope this will help You.
Best regards Daniel
