According to the Saab Quick Reference Parts Manual for the Classic 900 1979-1993 (94CV), there are two sets of driveshafts. The first is for up to the middle of 1986, BUT NOT for 16v turbos.
the other pair is for 1985 & later 16v turbos, All auto trans cars from mid 1986, and basically all 900s from 1987 & later.
This has NOTHING to do with the length of the driveshafts. Saab needed a larger inner drive cup & tripot bearing to handle the torque from the 16v turbo motor. They just decided to put these shafts on all the cars.
To put an 89 trans in a 1982, all you need is the driveshafts and inner driver tripot bearings from the 1989 car.
