Newbie Question: 'Brick'?

I often see you guys referring to Volvos as 'bricks'.  Pardon
the stupid American, but what's this all about?  Are Volvos 'bricks'
because they are sort of rectangular like bricks?  Because they
are solid like bricks?  Heavy like bricks?  Get rotten gas mileage like bricks?
Something else?
