(Theory, not practical) Since brake fluid is incompressable, the accumulator must have some sort of compressable gas in it, not necessarily under pressure, initially. Such gas would be separated from the fluid by a diaphragm of sorts. The gas may be replaced by a spring, in which case the accumulator may have a vent hole. When the pump builds pressure, the gas is compressed and the pressure 'stored' that way.
