Manual gearbox overhaul c900
Posted by Lachlan (more from Lachlan) on Thu, 29 Mar 2001 13:29:56
Hi All,

I have started the overhaul of a gearbox that I purchased really cheap -
125USD! it has been rebuilt once before by an Australian crowd, they used
Aussie-made bearings that's how I knew - overall the box seems to need a couple
of bearings and the reverse gears - the idler and the one on the main shaft.

Now, I have a couple of question for you gurus out there:

1. the top bearing on the primary drive chain sprocket seems to have a lot of
play but looks and feel good - is this by design? it seems that the seal there
dose not have a hope of maintaining a good seal witht he amount of play
available!!

2. the drive chains themselves have about 3/4' of play ! is this normal? there
is the dampener assy to smooth things out but still seems quite a lot!

3. The Diff looks and feels good, I suspect this is not going to be a problem,
the pinion bearing 'feels' good and has been replaced at last rebuild, should I
leave it alone?

4. there also seems to be a lot of play in the outer bearings on the output
shafts 1/4mm or there abouts, certainly visible! is this normal - I wish the
manual covered this stuff! its not *that* specialised, as it says in the manual
(Bentley)!!

Does anybody have any SAAB documentation on the manual gearbox with rebuild
specs/torques? There seems to be a requirment for some shiming - I hope that
the new bearings will not throw out the diff crown to pinion alignment or is
this not critical? certainly nice to keep backlash to a minimum if need be!

Finally, and thank you for your time, does anybody have access to cheap parts
RE above rebuild, or even the TWO gears that I requires as I think they will be
VERY expensive :(

Lachlan.
