Vacuum lines under the dash on '86 900T
Posted by Richard Klein (more from Richard Klein) on Thu, 20 Sep 2001 12:19:43
I'm borrowing my mom's '86 900 turbo. I don't have a lot of experience with
Saabs, but the boost levels seemed pretty low to me (on the in-dash gauge
the needle only gets about 1/3rd into the yellow zone) and the insulation on
the wires to the APC solenoid was trashed. I stripped the crumbling
insulation down 2 or 3 feet 'til I hit halfway decent insulation and wrapped
the wires in electrical tape (for now). I figured the wires must've shorted
at some point simply because the insulation was so far gone, so I decided to
make sure the APC system still actually worked. I can't hear the solenoid
click when I turn the key, but it does get 12V when the ignition's on and
nothing when it's off. With the ignition on, I blew through the center port
of the solenoid and air only came out the Return port. With the ignition
off air came out both the Return and Wastegate ports (I may have that
backwards, but it passed the test I got from Townsend Import's website).
Then I moved on to the Pressure Transducer under the dash.

Rather than reach out of site to hook my Mity-Vac (pressure side) up to the
transducer, I thought I'd pull a line off the Y-fitting that was slightly
more accessible. While I did that I managed to pull the hose on the center
branch of the Y loose from wherever it connected to (the boost gauge, I'd
guess). I also noticed some other vacuum lines that were cracked and one
other that was disconnected, so I guess I'll have to pull the lower dash
apart. Which screws do I need to remove, and where will I find them?

Oh, one pump of the Mity-Vac (whatever amount of pressure that is...) at the
pressure transducer sets the APC solenoid chattering, so I guess the APC
system works, though it may need adjustment.
