Engine Swap for '91 900 [saabnow]

My step-dad picked up a '91 900S for my little sister for $500. It ran, but
had no compression on the #2 cylinder. We pulled the head last night,
figuring we'd be replacing the head gasket or maybe replacing a valve, but
the head seems OK. The cylinder, however has a nice chip taken out of it's
side, and the piston has a matching flat on it's side. He's just going to
replace the engine now, rather than rebuild what he's got. This is the
16-valve, normally aspirated 2.1 liter engine on an automatic transmission.
He was talking about swapping in something with a little more power, but a
turbo engine would be more trouble than he's interested in. Are there any
other interesting swaps, like perhaps a 2.3 liter?
