First, make sure you have the correct amount of refrigerant in the system.

Then rule out the simple electrical sensors, whose job it is to cut the
compressor out, by disconnecting them and shorting their wires together:

Refrigerant low-pressure/high-pressure switch.
Evaporator Frost switch.
Engine coolant switch (in upper radiator hose, if equipped).
Any other switch that could prevent the compressor from engaging (study the
factory ACC wiring diagram for 1995 9000 to make sure you haven't missed
one).

If you can take all the sensors out of the equation, and your compressor
still cuts out with warm duct air on AUTO and LO, probably the ACC control
unit is to blame. A last test might be to take continuity readings on the
wires in the compressor clutch circuit (look for a bad wire in the harness),
and jumper the compressor clutch wire directly to the battery to see if
maybe the clutch itself is at fault.

> It doesn't work if I just press the 'econ' button.

The proper function of the ECON mode is to turn off the compressor. So it
sounds like this mode is working fine.

> I bet the climate control would be expen$ive to replace.

Yes, quite expensive. A salvage-yard unit may be a more sensible
alternative. Check out ebay !

> some European models had this as an option a few years ago,

As did some USA models. We have a USA 1990 9000S 2.0 non-turbo with good
old climate knobs. I love it !

Unfortunately, retrofitting the manual controls to an ACC car is not
straight forward. The labor-cost of having it done at a SAAB service
establishment would almost certainly exceed the cost of a brand new ACC
control unit.

> I think the whole idea of an automatic system is dumb.

I agree. Especially the '85-'89 systems that didn't have an OFF button, and
couldn't be made to remember your startup preferences.

> Someone please say yes and tell me how it's done!

Find a junkyard car with the manual system. Take the control panel,
heat-flap control cable, vent selector shaft/gear unit, fan speed resistor
pack, Recirc switch, and A/C switch. Clip a piece of the wiring harness
behind each of the last three components, and as much of the panel
illumination harness as you can.

Then obtain electrical wiring diagrams of both systems (ACC and manual-A/C),
and make the necessary harness modifications in your ACC car to accomodate
the manual-A/C system.

Then install the manual-A/C parts from the junkyard car into your car, and
you're done !
