Subject: Re: 89 900S loss of reverse and 5th ================= The pin on the shifter is supposed to be straight. It is not likely that a bent pin is preventing shifting into 5th, although it may prevent shifting into reverse if the pin is not allowed to retract into the shifter when you pull up on the lock out. These two gears are also related by shift gate inside the transmission. If the other gears still work, then the shift finger on the control shaft is okay. It may be having trouble sliding the 5th gear control vane through the selector gate on the main control shaft. You may be able to see the problem by removing the cover plate on the right side of the engine where the transmission dipstick tube enters the transmission. All the good stuff is visible behind that plate. Remove the 10mm bolt that holds the dipstick tube, remove 9 12mm bolts, and remove the cover. All the oil will spill out. There is also a spring, but it probably won't fall out, and it is easy to put back if it does. It goes in the top left hole. Identify the broken piece, and head to the parts store. Good Luck. -Andy ================ To send a response, just hit reply! The Saab Network - On the Internet Since 1988 http://www.saabnet.com/
