Rough running [saabnet.com]

Subject: Rough running ================= My '91 9000T runs very rough at low throttle, and I've been having immense trouble figuring it out. I've replaced the O2 sensor, which snuffed out the check engine light at the time, but it made no difference to the way it runs. My now former mechanic tried replacing a fuel injector, also to no avail. DI cassette and spark plugs have also been swapped out, with no improvement. One interesting thing I've found: disconnecting the wires to either of the fuel injectors on outside cylinders seems to make it run more smoothly, but disconnecting the wires to either of the two inside cylinders makes it run worse. I've tried removing the fuel rail and swapping an outside fuel injector with an inside one, but end up with the same result as before. It is also known that the catalytic converter is bad (it has a hole, if not blockage). I smell gas at idle, which seems to be eminating from the catalyst. Could this alone be causing the problem? I'm apprehensive about having it replaced if it's not likely to be the only culprit; I'm thinking it's more likely that the problem came first and took the catalytic converter down with it. Another strange thing is that the turbo guage indicates less of a vaccuum at idle than there used to be (needle hovers just to the left of neutral). So, in which direction do I go next? Compression test? Pull the cam cover and look for problems? Look for vaccuum leaks? Any and all advice is much appreciated.
Thanks, -Derek '91 9000T 5sp 173K '01 Viggen 5dr 48K ================ To send a response, just hit reply! The Saab Network - On the Internet Since 1988 http://www.saabnet.com/
