Subject: Knockin' sound ================= Hi everybody,
For a few months now, my '95 9000CS has had this.... I don't know a good word to use here, but... 'knocking' or 'crunching' kind of sound that it would make when I accelerate or decelerate the car. The sound would tend to come from around the frontish of the car, somewhere below my two feet.
It feels 'structural', in that, it's as if some part of the body of the car is 'popping' (like a joint?) when accelerating the car, because the FWD is pulling the front of the car, and when I decelerate, it's popping back into place. Usually the sounds will be in succession of 2 or 3, rather than a single 'pop', but that does happen at times. The sound isn't super loud, but it's very audible nonetheless.
I also get a popping sound, 2 to 3 times in a succession, when I'm steering to the left or right extreme... i.e. when I have the wheel turned all the way to the left (or right), like when I'm pulling out of the driveway or out of a parking spot. The popping sound I get when I ac/de-celerate is similar (although maybe not the same) to this sound.
I took it in to Mecca Motors in Brighton, MA where I always take my car and asked them to take a look. I also had a rattling exhaust (or something) at low RPM problem and told them to fix that as well. When I got the car back, they told me there were some loose nuts&bolts and that they fixed the problem. I thought 'great!' and drove the car away, only to find out that the rattle had gone away, but this popping/knocking/crunching thing persisted.
Now, perhaps I don't need to worry about it because they didn't do anything about it. What do you think? Any help, as always, is greatly appreciated.
Specs:
'95 9000CS 189,200 miles (w/ a swapped '95 Aero engine with about 100,000 miles on it)
In July, it got a major (nearly cost $1,000) operation, replacing some seal(s)? after I found the car leaking oil and/or steering fluid. This happened just as I was leaving the country for a month. When I got back to the US (my wife had been driving the car for a while, but she knows less about cars than I do, which is super little), all sorts of things were wrong with the car.... the front wheels had like nearly 50psi and the rears only 22psi air (!!!), the transmission would often slip going from 2nd to 3rd, there was that thing rattling/jangling at the bottom of the car at low RPM, and this knocking kind of sound. I caught the air thing after a couple of days of driving (it just didn't feel right) and got the transmission checked out and the mechanic fiddled around with the..what was it called? Down-shifting wire? All of this, including the surgery, was done at a place on Long Island, NOT at Mecca Motors, BTW.
Thanks,
