Timing Chain Replacement on Classic 900
Posted by John Kupiec (more from John Kupiec) on Wed, 29 Sep 1999 16:40:03
Dan,
Trust your nose. This is a BF rat. As I recall, the 92 900 is the last or nest to last year of the 'classic' 900 line. Classic 900s have a timing chain that is designed to last through what most people would consider a normal service life. Step one in the procedure for replacing the timing chain on a classic 900 is 'Remove engine'. I asked my local independent mechanic about the timing chain a couple of years ago. His advice echoes that of other respondents: unless there is an obvious defect in the chain or tensioner, let it alone. Timing chains can easily last over 200k miles if the engine receives regular oil and filter changes.
Don't change your timing chain. Change your mechanic.
