Steering Rack
Posted by Ramon Veloso (more from Ramon Veloso) on Tue, 12 Oct 1999 11:26:07
I have a 89 9000T with 157,000 miles. Back in April or May I took
it to the mechanic thinking that the car had a leek because I was
topping off the car with power-steering fluid every two months. The
mechanic told me that it was not a leek but a bad steering rack. I don't
exactly remember what was wrong with the rack except that it would cost
some where between seven and eight hundred dollars to fix. The mechanic,
however, told me that I did not have to fix the problem right then as long
as I kept the power-steering fluid at the proper level. If I didn't
maintain the proper level it would cost double to fix the problem.

Just this past weekend when driving in high speeds (65mph or higher) the
steering wheel did not seem to be as tight as usual -- it did not seem as
if the car was tightly hugging the road. And there were a couple of
occasions that felt as if I was hydro-planing even though the roads were
dry. If any of you have ever driven a late eighties Chrysler mini-van,
that's how it felt like.

What I want to know is: Can the mechanic's remedy go on indefinitely, or
will the rack eventually need to be fixed? I was thinking that I would
not fix the rack until I was topping off the car twice a week. Currently
I need to do it every fourteen days or so. Could my experience this past
weekend been caused by pouring too much fluid in the tank? (When I topped
of the car the morning I had the loose steering sensation, I poured fluid
up to or may be even a little pass the 'hot' level sign on the tank when
the car was cold -- it had not been driven for at least twelve hours. I
also poured in fluid when I did not need to -- the fluid was above the
'add' level sign and just below the 'cold' level sign or right on
it.) Finally, could my not fixing the rack back in May cause more serious
and expensive damages?
