TCS light on all the time
Posted by Ari Kahan (more from Ari Kahan) on Thu, 2 Dec 1999 13:46:41
In my '96 900SE 6cyl:
The car's got TCS (traction control system), which prevents the driven wheels from spinning on a rainy day when you slam down on the accelerator.
The default is that TCS is turned on; if you turn it off (using the dashboard pushbutton), the 'TCS OFF' light comes on. So, normal situation is: TCS ON, TCS indicator light OFF.
Even if you turn TCS off, the next time you start the car, it's turned on (and light is off, except for a few seconds of self-check after you start the car.)
For the past few days, the 'TCS off' light has been on constantly -- well, almost constantly. Typically, it turns on as soon as I've started the car and driven a few feet.
If I beat on the TCS button (which normally toggles TCS on and off), nothing happens; the TCS light just stays on.
The button can't be worn or stuck or anything; I never press it, as I prefer to keep TCS on all the time.
It's not raining here, so the roads aren't slippery, so I'm hard-pressed to find out if the TCS system is actually on or off, regardless what the light says.
According to the manual, a constantly-on light means that there's a problem with the TCS system.
Is there a 'typical' thing that goes wrong with TCS (after only 65K miles!) on these cars? Relay? Short? Likely suspects?
Thanks!
