Jeff,
Sounds like you burned your clutch. The clutch friction material has a unique bitter smell. It is possible with a lot of abuse or a factory defect to fry a clutch in 14000 miles. I don't know much about Saab clutches, but it is one of those jobs that takes a lot of work to get to the parts. It is important to get all the suspect parts changed.
That would be clutch disk, pressure plate and possibly flywheel. The dealer may hesitate to change the flywheel. Ask to see it before they button it up, if they say it does not need changing. (it may not, but most likley it does.) A bad flywheel will look burnt and have slight cracks in the surface.
Drive Safe,
Joe
