I have been noticing recently (past couple months) that my '04 Linear SS w/ auto. trans. has a lot of vibration apparently coming from the engine (noticable through the accelerator, steering wheel, and buzzing sound, which is loud enough that a passenger has asked me if my car was OK) in certain conditions. These conditions seem to be 1500-2000 RPM when the torque converter is locked up. It's easiest to reproduce by putting the car in manual mode and shifting into 4th at 35-40 mph, but occurs in 3rd and 5th as well, and in automatic mode as well as manual mode.
I took the car into the dealership, and a service tech and I went for a ride. As described, I put it into 4th and sure enough, it happened, though not quite as badly -- I didn't find the "sweet" spot. He said: "Oh, well, you're lugging it pretty badly", and went on to comment that the manual mode was really only for exceptional circumstances. He had me put it in auto mode (where the problem is much harder to reproduce), and I pointed out that, based on the tach, the auto mode runs in 4th at even lower speeds , rpms down near 1000, reasonably often. He said "oh, well you can't go by that," meaning, I assume, that my observations of the tach weren't meaningful.
He drove the car for a while, and said it might be that the ECU software needed updating or the shift adaptation was screwy somehow, so they checked the software version (which was the most recent), and reset the shift adaptation.
Naturally, that didn't fix anything, so I have a few questions.
1. It seems to me that this service tech was full of s***. I don't think I'm lugging it at over 1500 RPM. I don't think the tach is lying to me, and consensus on this bulletin board seems to be that driving in manual mode all the time is fine. Am I right here?
2. Anyone have a guess what might be going on with the car? Possibly relevant facts:
~12500 miles, has not had an oil change or a Techron run yet (I figure it's not worth changing the oil at this point, but I promise to be good in the future, and I'm going to run Techron next fillup)
It's probably not wheel/tire related: happened with the snows and steel wheels, and the OEM 16s.
I say only with the torque converter locked up because it doesn't happen in 1st or 2nd, and (I think) only after the torque converter locks up in 3rd.
Whew, that was long.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Andrew
