Did some pretty extensive testing in the first 5000 km on my Linear. IMO it doesn't matter what the cost of the fuel is, it matters what the resulting cost per km (or mile for those in the US) is. For combined city/hiway (about 70% hiway, 30% city) here's what I get:
87 Octane: 8.6 litres per 100 KM (27 miles per US gallon)
89 Octane: 7.8 l/100km (30 mpg US)
91 Octane: 7.2 l/100km (32.5 mpg US)
Here in Alberta, fuel costs are as follows (roughly anyway...)
87 x .70 per litre = .060 per km for fuel.
89 x .75 per litre = .585 per km
91 x .80 per litre = .576 per km
As the car gets a bit older, I expect fuel economy to improve slightly (break in etc.) but I expect that the ratios will be more or less the same.
Performance wise, I notice a marked difference between 87 and 89, but very little difference between 89 and 91.
