According to all sorts of other places I've looked at, the signal is either working or not unlike a static filled or weak FM signal. Aux input is a single jack so you unplug the XM if you want to use your ipod or vice versa. According to an XM enthusiasts forum, channel 76 on XM is one of their 'fine tuning' stations. If the sound is good on that channel the radio is fine. If the fine tuning station sounds good, but other channels do not, then it is the bit-rate used by XM-Radio to broadcast the other stations. Whatever the case may be, it is unsatisfactory.

Regarding the antenna's placement, I think I noticed a lexus w/ the older and larger XM antenna inside next to its third brake light. So, I suppose inside mounting is nothing new.
