Only cars that are sold by a Saab dealer qualify for the Saab CPO warranty. So you can't take a car you own or somebody else owns and have it CPO'd by a Saab dealer. It's not practical for a dealer to buy the car from you and sell it back to you owing the the sales tax complications, sales tax would be due on the sale which kinda' puts the cost outa' whack.
The one common loophole is where someone buys their own leased car at the end of the lease. Then the dealer does indeed sell the car and charge the tax. In these situations most dealers are willing to pass along the cost of the CPO warranty to the purchaser as a courtesy and in anticipation of the future warranty business. The cost of the CPO policy from Saab is $1,200 and the inspection to qualify the car for CPO status is 3 hours of labor, so that totals $1,500 at cost. There's nothing to prevent a dealer marking that up.
You could purchase an extended warranty from many sources, online, at the dealer or anywhere. Many Saab dealers handle the General Motors Protection Plan and Saab has lately started offering plans from a Saab branded Universal Warranty.
You could/should also have the car inspected by a Saab dealer as it's still under the orginal factory warranty. It wouldn't have to be the 3 hours required to do the detailed CPO inspection. Most dealers charge around 1 - 1.5 hours of labor to do a pre-purchase inspection.
