I'm no expert on these system but I will say that whenever one of my wheels is temporarily airborne, one of the systems kicks in and I hear the same bad sounding grinding noise (I think its the ABS). This is aparently normal sound.
As for driving in snow, I have not done it yet, but the Car Guys on NPR got the exact same question a few weeks ago and their response was essentially, yes, you apply the brakes and the ABS will back off on them but will eventually bring you to a stop (need to press the pedal and trust the system). This feels unlike cars of the old days, and drivers need to allow more time for braking in snow and practice steering while braking to avoid crashing into objects and to get the overall feel of it. I think the moral is apply brakes early, ABS will avoid sliding, you focus on steering and the system will help you stop.
