I guess I live in a different world then the rest of the others who have posted so far.
I have a 2008 2.0T convertible, and typically get between 14 and 15 MPG. Most of my driving is around town (Santa Monica), which is very congested, and has lots and lots of stop signs. Also, most of my trips are very short -- just a mile or so. If I take a couple of freeway trips to Dowhtown Los Angeles (16 miles) or sometimes a bit further, my mileage increases to 17 MPG or so, sometimes a bit more. I only use 91 octane gas, the highest octane rating available in California.
Although I have historically been an aggressive driver with a "heavy foot" I have been conscientiously trying to drive efficiently, by accelerating more slowly, not going too fast, trying to time my driving to synchronize with the traffic signals, and taking my foot off the gas to coast as I approach stop signs and red lights.
On the other hand, on a non-stop trip from Santa Barbara to Santa Monica, all freeway and little traffic, mostly at 70 MPH, I got 31 MPG.
