I had a rock hit my windshield and it lasted for quite some time. Although, the spread is inevetable. My question would be, do you have comprehensive insurance? I'm not sure the common trades in your state, but some states won't bother with it until it spreads. Either way, my insurance covered my windsheild. Just make sure you DEMAND and OEM replacement. Some companies contract windsheilds to a third party company who only replace windsheilds but they use a cheaper version. My tab for the OEM ran $780 and I saw the other post saying $700 from dealer. If I had inurance I wouldn't bother it. As far as safety goes, if your not going 200mph you should be fine. Obviously this is an exaggeration but front windsheilds are designed to be very safe even if they split. Check with insurance and avoid losing money at the dealer if you can.
