Robin,
I have an 03 2.0t. I used 87 and I had some nasty engine knocks. I believe the manual says to use 90 or better regardless of engine but I may be wrong. It makes sence to me to use the higher grade because the engine runs MUCH better and you get better milage. It all works out to be roughly the same.
