I agree, but where can one find the filtration data? I have recently switched from Purolator Pure One to Purolator Premium because of the same "by-pass at cold oil temperature" issue you identify with Mobil-1.
During my filter search I found the Technical Q & A page for Hastings filters, a sister brand for Baldwin. In these pages Hastings identified there are far fewer filter manaufacturers than filter brands (I think we all knew that), but also stated that each manufacturer has a choice of 50 to 75 different oil filtration media to choose between when building filters, and that some of these media are propritary to specific brands.
So two filters made by the same company, and sold at the same price point, may be significanlty different. With all the manufacturing differences noted in the A/C Delco PF53 filters since I purchased my 9-5 in 2000, I am not certain that even the car manufacturers exercise much control over the design and construction of filters with their own name (or parts brand name) painted on the shell.
It would be nice to have an up to date report from an independent source rating the various filter brands & models, but I have yet to find one.
p.s. Does Purolator now market filters for the Aero V6 engine?
