Ignoring a Check Engine Light

I have a 2003 9-3 - about 50K miles. The car drives fine - the check engine light just went on and has stayed on for the past few days. The CEL went on about 4 hours after the car passed its biannual state emissions inspection - don't need another test until 6-2011.
When the car was new, this happened all of the time, and I immediately brought it in the to dealer each time - mostly turned out to be gas cap issues. The gas cap was replaced eventually.
Question for the group - if there is absolutely no indication of anything actually wrong with the way the car is driving, is there any down side to simply ignoring the CEL until the next regularly scheduled maintenance appointment?
Thanks for your advice and input.
