It's interesting that you bring up the issue of rust. That's the one issue that pushed me away from Japanese cars back in the nineties. I buy new and keep my cars until they rust. With my previous Toyota's & Acura's, that wasn't a very long time. My first Saab is a 1995 900S that my son now owns, and after having it 14 years I can say it's the best car I've owned to date. My 2006 9-3SC may outdo it, but I can't say that with certainty yet. The only rust issues I've heard of the current generation 9-3 are some isolated cases where it sounds like a small spot the paint was sandblasted away likely from high speed driving. Any steel is going to rust if paint chips aren't addressed. Although I'm certain the Asian cars have come a long way in terms of rust resistance, I still work on them often enough to see they're generally not up to the level of Saab.
I'd much prefer to put up with some additional mechanical and electrical issues than to have corrosion issues. It all depends what's important to you. And then there's the driving experience to consider....
