I would point out that the 3.0L V6 as used in the 9-5 has an impeccable reliability record, provided it is maintained correctly. Which means the timing belt and tensioners replaced on-time. Saab erred in not recommending the replacement of the tensioners at the 60K service when the belt was changed, but that is hardly the engine's fault. Early 9-5 and 9-3 engines are a total crapshoot, and really bear NO relation to what is under the hood of a C900 due to all the internal changes. All done in the name of fuel efficiency, which is admirable, but they sure killed the durability unless impeccably maintained. And again, Saab shot themselves in the foot by specifying inappropriate maintenance intervals and materials.
The Ecotec is a superb engine, and if nothing else the all-aluminum construction will minimize head and oilpan gasket issues. Infinitely more modern, and over the years since '03 it has proven VERY reliable. Absolutely minimal reported issues, even on these troubleshooting boards.
