Stephen, thanks for the thoughtful response. A couple questions:
"Using an oil that does not meet GM LL 025 A/B and changing it on a traditional change schedule is an alternative that may not save you money and may or may not be suitable for your engine, but that's what you've done and so far it seems to be working OK."
I had thought that the oil I'm using, Mobil 1 fully synthetic 5W30 *does* meet GM LL 025 A/B. (Doesn't it?) The only nonstandard thing I'm doing, so far as I know, is changing at 7,500 miles, instead of when the SID tells me; in all cases, 7,500 mile changes have been MORE frequent than prescribed by the SID.
"A half quart in 7500 miles is really minimal oil usage."
Nonono, it's ONE AND A HALF QUARTS every 7500 miles. Does that change your view at all? (I presume not, since you point out that anything less than a quart per thousand miles isn't worth complaining about...but damn, that seems high to me.)
