I reported some time ago on replacement of the OEM ContiProContacts, at 23k, on my 06 9-3 Aero, with Yokohama Avid W4s. My initial and interim reports were favorable -- the tires did well in dry, wet, and snow, and were reasonably quiet, and are now just under 30k miles. In the last 10k or so,however, the tires have worn in a feathered pattern which has resulted in considerable tire noise; the car sounds like a military tactical vehicle on pavement. With 4/32 of tread remaining, they're probably good for about 35k, maybe more, if I can stand them. I've had the 4-wheel alignment done, and the tires have worn evenly, but with a choppy characteristic. Whether this is partly because of occasional spirited driving, or something else, is unclear. I maintain tire pressure, keep the car aligned, and drive in a manner that generally produces long tire and brake life.

At least one Tire Rack contributor reported similar wear on the same tires in a review. Now I notice that Yokohama has a new iteration of the tire re-titled "Envigor" with emphasis on improved wear and reduced noise. Was this a tire engineering issue that's now been addressed? Unclear. In any case, Yokohama has a similar but not identical successor to my tires.

Key question: replace them with what? First choice at the moment is the ContiExtemeContact DWS, which has very good reviews. Second choice is probably the Goodyear Eagle GT. I'm a little gunshy on the Yoko's.

Nevertheless, I would recommend anyone shopping for tires give careful consideration to the Yokohamas. We've had excellent results with a somewhat similar tire on my wife's Honda Accord EX V6.

I will do a 4-wheel alignment at the same time as I replace these tires, and will be paying close attention to wear and performance of whatever I choose next.

Will report on anything interesting about Yokohamas, but given that Yokohama has a successor tire, few Saab drivers are likely to repeat my experience.

Questions / comments?
