I called Yokohama customer service to discuss the peculiar wear on the Avid W4s, and potential improvement of the ENvigor tire -- which apparently succeeds the Avids. Response was customer-oriented and helpful, but tempered with marketing-speak. Rep said there had been few complaints / problems with Avids, but that ENvigors are newer technology and superior tires. ENvigors have 45K mile tread life warranty, as I understood. Strong pitch for ENvigors with lots of enthusiasm but few facts. Key advertised differences appear to be improvement in tread wear, and an improved tread pattern that helps reduce noise. Hmmm!
Rep seemed fairly knowledgeable, and attributed the tread wear I experienced to either alignment or aggressive driving. As the car was barely out of spec when I had it aligned early in life of tires and they have worn evenly, and my aggressive driving is pretty limited, I am a bit suspicious, but cannot conclude the tires are at fault. Yokohama V4s on my wife's Accord V6 are peforming well.
Based on responses to my first posting, and additional research on Tire Rack, I remain cautious about Yokohamas again. First choice is still ContiExtremeContact DWS, with Goodyear Eagle GT as close second.
Thanks to those who responded,
SEN
