The check engine light was not illuminated prior to the water damage. I agree that sensor fault was most likely a result of the water, but since the mechanic did not take that position, the insurance adjuster did not authorize its repair.
As for the damage, I found myself caught in high water due to a flash flood. The engine stalled and eventually the water level rose high enough to cover half of the tires. After pushing the car to higher ground I spent the next three hours bailing water out of the cabin with a drinking cup.
Surprisingly, the damage was considerably minor, especially since the engine was running when it was stalled by water entering via the air filter box. The dealer replaced the throttle body, spark plugs, carpets, and the stereo amplifier.
