EGT Sensor Purpose? Posted by Nicholas [Email] (#2995) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Nicholas) on Wed, 2 Feb 2011 03:39:11 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My 2003 93 Vector (105k mi) has had a faulty Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) sensor and faulty rear O2 sensor. I have driven approximately 5,000 miles with this condition and have noticed no reduction in performance or gas mileage. Aside from the annoyance of my check engine light, am I running the risk of shortening the life of my catalytic converter?
I believe the rear (or lower) O2 sensor's job is to allow the ECU the ability to determine the effectiveness of the catalytic converter by comparing the air leaving the cat to the air entering the cat, but I'm not certain what the EGT sensor's role is. Does the EGT sensor provide the ECU another method to determine the state of the catalytic converter? If the exhaust temperature is not within a certain range does the ECU attempt to compensate by adjusting air/fuel ratio, timing, or some other factor? Am I simply needlessly polluting the atmosphere (no emissions tests are required where I live)?
I would simply replace the sensors, but I would at least like to know what the EGT does before I fork over $130-$180 for the sensor. I have posted before on this issue (http://www.saabnet.com/tsn/bb/9-3/index.html?bID=142716) and one of the responses suggested the EGT may not be at fault, but may be remedied by a Trionic software upgrade. My VIN did not fall within the range listed in the Saab Bulletin, so I do suspect my sensor is actually faulty (I have cleaned/checked the connections).
Any info on the EGT sensor's function would be greatly appreciated!
Nicholas
