Mike,
You don't have to buy the GM warranty from your local dealer; you can get it from ANY GM dealer, and it's a high margin item...they have a lot of room to move on the price. As well, there are a lot of permutations: You can pay a little more and get a zero deductible version, or pay a little more for four years instead of three, or for 60K miles instead of 36K, etc. A diligent dealer will offer you all the options, and show you the pricing for each, so you can consider what's most cost-effective for you, based on how many miles/year you drive, how long you plan to own the car, etc. For example, if you know you're going to drive 15K miles/year, it makes no sense to buy a 45K/6 year policy...it makes more sense to buy a 45K/3 year policy, for less money, since you' know you're not going to get the benefit of those last three years, because you would have exceeded the mileage already. For reference, I got a 6 year/100K/NO deductible plan on my 2010 Saab for about $2,500. I found that prices varied widely for the exact same GM policy at different dealers. One dealer in Georgia is particularly attuned to selling these policies, has aggressive pricing, and (I found) was willing to give me a further discount if I paid up front, rather than on a payment plan (as you are apparently willing to do.) They even have a phone number dedicated specifically to service contract sales: 877-466-9166. I would not buy a plan from anyone other than GM: a few years ago, one of the "independent" insurers, Warranty Gold, went under, leaving all their policyholders without the coverage they had paid for. We all know the government won't let GM fail, so it's a safe bet they won't disappear while your extended warranty is still in force.
I'm not in any way affiliated with GM, or Vaden Automotive...just had a positive experience with the latter.
