Ron, when I talked to the local dealer mechanic and parts manager, they mentioned this wear pattern without my prompting, and said it was normal for that ATE caliper. I've known and dealt the parts manager a long time, so I believe this explanation.
This explanation corroborated what I found on the rear brakes. While the driver's side inner pad wore out first, the passenger side inner pad was nearly gone (maybe 1 mm thickness) while the outer passenger side pad had several millimeters of thickness left.
I, too, initially suspected a sticky driver's side rear caliper, but after I adjusted the brakes, I found no evidence of sticking on either side.
