This is a weird experience, having bought a brand new Saab after 27 years (three used ones since the new one in 1981). I'm not going to skimp on required maintenance, but it looks to me from reviewing the Service Schedule (1) 30,000 mile schedule is really just the third oil and filter change; (2) if so, nearly everything else is "check"; (3) when I was getting paid to fix cars -- quite some time ago -- "inspections" were included in your "grease, oil, filter" job, every 3,000 miles; no one charged for topping up the brake fluid, power steering fluid or antifreeze -- so I guess that's all different now -- people charge just to look? (4) the schedule is a little confusing -- some instructions are clearly "check" or "change" but most don't have a verb: when it says "brake pads" that obviously means just "check" since its every 10,000mi, but what about "engine air cleaner element" at 40,000 -- is that check or change? (5) I see looking in my book that the dealer has never "logged" the inspections & maintenance; I suppose I should have been more diligent, but I expect they would have said they keep the records in their computer, which is fine if they give me access and they stay in business.
