As Swedecar previously mentioned, valve probs are cropping up. My symptoms: would start and run fine when warm outside or already warmed up. Winter comes, first day below 40, I can't start it. Finally cranked long enough and it barely starts firing, shaking like freight train, warms up and idles fine.
Diagnostics: Changed plugs. Ran 3 bottles of Techron thru it, regapped plugs. Tried spark tester, has spark so not bad DI's. Checked fuel pump, had pressure, same with the regulator. Pulled each injector while running to observe idle, it did chang, so they work. No vacuum leaks, no check engine lights. Not the CPS because it did run fine once started.
Summary: Finally had the Saab Tech hook up the big scanner, absolutely no stored codes other than my broken mirror hadn't been married to this car (Yes, any powered replacement part will show the original cars VIN unless married, crazy, supposed to help prevent theft! lol)
He kept it overnight to recreate problem in morning when completely cold. Same symptoms. This time he ran a compression test... 1 & 4 HAD 15-20LBS, 2 & 3 HAD 70-90. IDEALLY ALL SHOULD HAVE 180LBS. So we thought sludged up valves sticking. Pulled off the head and NO SLUDGE, CLEAN AS A WHISTLE. He called the Saab Factory Tech, says something has been happening to the valve faces on these engines, but not all years, not allowing them to seal tight. Advised to get them relapped at the engine shop and there should never be any other problems with them. Picking up car in 2 days, will update results at that time. Bill $1100 10-12hrs of labor plus parts. My car is less than 5yrs old, but has 105,000mis, so missed warranty DAMN! It was used and considering the car is in perfect shape and got 36mpg on highway at 75-80mph this past holiday, getting it fixed is worth it! Just bad luck is all, had lots of Saabs over the years, first time I've ever had a problem like this! Oh well... lol
