The smoke machine is a standalone box with a pump and heating element that heats up an oil (baby oil) and you hook a hose up to whatever system you want to smoke test.
Most auto shops should have one and if they don't, they haven't moved into the 20th century yet and definitely not the 21st.
It fills the system with smoke and wherever it is a leak, it ours out.
Still, with the tank installed on a 9-3 Sport Sedan and if it would be leaking from the fuel pump or any of the hoses on top, it would be just about impossible to see due to the lack of clearance between floor board and tank.
But at least, if you see smoke coming from that area, you know the tank has to come down again.
Yeah, I have tried to lube the o-ring, lock ring any everything but it doesn't seem to be an easy way to close that ring. Even with the special tool and a long 1/2" ratchet.
