Usually no warning signs they are going to break, they just do. Good thing is they rarely take out the timing chain (Ive only seen one). A mileage suggestion is difficult as I have replaced broken tensioner guides on vehicles with only 40k miles up to 180k miles. Also have a '03SS client with 290k who is on the original setup!
More often the RH upper engine mount is collapsed allowing engine vibrations to be transmitted into the chassis and steering wheel. I recommend taking the vehicle to a good independant and having them go though the entire vehicle (PPI) before purchase.
If the car was/is in the north, broken front and rear suspension springs are much much more common and a LOT more dangerous when driving.
